It has been a full year since the launch of the National Technical Guidelines on MDSR in Ethiopia. Over 500 health centres and over 30 hospitals have been now trained in MDSR. The recent newsletter from Ethiopia reports that over 150 deaths have been reported, analysed and responded to.
The Federal Ministry of Health recently held consultation meetings about its new strategy to eliminate obstetric fistula, which mainly results from obstructed labour and ruptured uterus. The synergies between with MDSR and some of these maternal morbidity issues were acknowledged, as they could be causes leading to “near misses.” Opportunities to link these and other MCH initiatives to ensure MDSR is fully integrated and streamlined are being explored.
